| This fabulous octagonal micro mosaic of St. Peters in Rome, Italy is truly a magnificent piece of artwork. Created at the turn of the 20th century as a souvenir for tourists of the Grand Tour, these micromosaic have become a highly collectible form of art. They were made of microscopic pieces of colored glass tiles. These colored glass tiles called "tesserae" were then inlaid together to form the subject matter of the mosaic. The detail is what makes this micromosaic so special. The presence of people within square of St. Peter's, the perfect representation of the subject matter and the presence of all the tesserae with their perfect condition. The mosaic alone measures more that 2" in diameter. The octagonal onyx within which it is set is close to 3". This piece is a paperweight or plaque. It would also make a fabulous cover to a stone or wood box made of the same shape. Outstanding! |
