MICRO MOSAIC OF ST. PETERS
This fabulous octagonal micro mosaic of St. Peters in Rome, Italy is truly a magnificent piece of artwork. Created at the turn of the 20th century as a souvenir for tourists of the Grand Tour, these micromosaic have become a highly collectible form of art. They were made of microscopic pieces of colored glass tiles. These colored glass tiles called "tesserae" were then inlaid together to form the subject matter of the mosaic. The detail is what makes this micromosaic so special. The presence of people within square of St. Peter's, the perfect representation of the subject matter and the presence of all the tesserae with their perfect condition. The mosaic alone measures more that 2" in diameter. The octagonal onyx within which it is set is close to 3". This piece is a paperweight or plaque. It would also make a fabulous cover to a stone or wood box made of the same shape. Outstanding!

This fine Roman school micromosaic has great detail and is complete with all tiny tesserae intact. The subject is Rome's Foro Italico or Roman Forum. It was beautifully illustrated within onyx stone and in excellent condition. Circa late 1800's.

ANTIQUE TORTOISE LORGNETTE
This Victorian Tortoise lorgnette is circa late 1800's. It is all original and in fabulous condition.It has an elaborate carving made from the shell of a Tortoise in a scrolled cutout floral design. The reading glasses are still functional and the lenses can also be removed to customize your own prescription. Lorgnettes were popular in the late 1800's and Tortoise shell was used for many fashion items. Today however, the species is protected. Demand is still high for the Tortoise look in accessories such as eye glass frames and jewelry, but this look has been reproduced with man made materials.
